What is Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP)?

NLP is a communication model that describes how language (linguistics) affects our body and physiology (neurology).  Words and representations in our mind function as symbols, symbols that re-present the things in the external world.  In the same way that map of Miami is NOT that same thing as Miami itself, our inner mental movies are NOT the external experience.  The magic of symbols is that the movies we play in the theater of our mind send messages and commands to our nervous systems about what to feel and how to respond. This creates our internal reality.

As a model of human functioning, NLP describes the processes and patterns (programming) that is currently governing our mind-body system and the processes and patterns that could enable us to "run our own brain" in new and much more resourceful ways.  NLP is about how to change the communication (mapping/movie-making) so that we can experience more resourceful states of mind-and-body.

What is Neuro-Semantics (NS)?

Neuro-Semantics is about meaning and meaningfulness (semantics) and how the meanings we create are NOT only at the level of representation as we make movies in our minds (NLP), but exists in all of the higher levels of frames (beliefs, thoughts, decisions, memories, etc.) about those movies. And in fact those higher level frames are much more important and powerful than primary level representations.

The movies + the meanings we set (semantics) create all of our emotions, skills, states, and abilities in our bodies (neurology).

We never just think or feel.  We think and feel about our thoughts and emotions and do so layer upon layer upon layer, thinking about our feelings, feeling about our feelings, etc.

Each layer creates another frame, and so creates our matrix of frames of meaning (See definitions below).  This is the construct of our inner world that comprises all of the Rules of the Games that we play in our actions, behaviors, and skills.

Neuro-Semantics works with the layering of our states (Meta-States) that create our Matrix of Frames (the Matrix model) and that leads to how we can actually close the gap between what we know and what we do.

Just like your fingers now know how to type without you even thinking about it anymore, Neuro-Semantics focuses on the synergy that results when we can translate the great ideas in our heads so that they are in our body.

As a model with many sub-models for making the structure of subjective experience explicit, the heart of Neuro-Semantics is modeling (see definition below) experiences of excellence and mastery.  This modeling process continues to enable us to create many models and patterns for replicating those highly desired experiences.

What do we mean by 'Meta'?

Meta means 'to transcend and include'.  Meta levels organize, modulate, govern, control, categorize, and classify those things within them. For example your family is 'meta' to you, it transcends and includes you.  The culture you are in is meta to your family, it transcends and includes it, and you.  In human thinking the meta-function is important because it opens us to the possibility to think again about our thoughts, ultimately giving us the ability to transcend and transform them.

What is the Meta-States Model?

The Meta-States Model of Neuro-Semantics which was developed by L. Michael Hall in 1994 for accessing and refining the thoughts in the back of our mind was acknowledged by INLPTA in 1995 as "the most significant contribution to NLP".

Meta-States refer to the thoughts-and-feelings that we have about our thoughts-and-feelings.

For example, if you are sad in response to something that happened in the environment - that is a primary state (NLP).   If you are mad at yourself for being sad - that is a meta-state (NS).

Meta-states are a function of our ability to reflect upon ourselves and our experiences, as opposed to the environment.  We apply one state to another, and so layer state upon state.  The meta-states model provides us the ability to model 'reflexivity'.

This model gives a Coach the ability to precision question to find these meta-state structures and to invite a client to become aware of these structures for checking their quality and evaluating them.  For more information on the Meta-States Model, see Secrets of Personal Mastery by L. Coaching is the mobilizing of a client's resources to an agreed outcome that unleashes the talents, passions, and potentials of that client so that he or she can experience more, be more, know and feel more, do more, contribute more, and have more.   Coaching is a very focused conversation that primarily uses questions and meta-questions (See definition below) tot get to the heart of things and facilitate change and transformation.  Coaching is about the transformation of performance, beliefs and values, meanings and directions and so is about performance change, evolutionary change, and revolutionary change (See definitions below).

What is Performance Coaching?

Performance Coaching is the form/level of Coaching in which most coaches operate.  At this first level of Coaching, a Coaches focus will be on incremental change and modification of a Clients skills and behaviors; what the Client can perform or do in action.  Performance Coaching is highly effective in Workplace Coaching, Sales Coaching, Sports Coaching, and task orientated Coaching such as writing a book, winning a competition, public speaking, finding a new job etc.

Typical performance coaching may go something like this... "What do you want? What do you need to do to get it? Did you do it? What didn't you do that? What do you need to do in order to do it next time. So did you do what you said you were going to do now?..."

What is Developmental Coaching?

Who is Meta-Coaching designed for?

Meta-Coaching is targeted for three groups of people.  Firstly, Coaches, new and experienced. Throughout the 1990s coaching has been mostly a grab-bag of tricks without a methodology or discipline. As Coaching has begun to grow up as a field and enter Universities, a consistent and unified theory and set of practices have been sought for to give the field its own uniqueness.

Meta-Coaching answers these needs as it has been able to designate a unique place for Coaching that distinguishes it from therapy, counseling, consulting, training, and mentoring. For the coach, Meta-Coaching advances the field and offers a unified structure.]

Secondly, for managers and leaders. Meta-Coaching is designed for the business context for enabling people to communicate more effectively, give and receive feedback more accurately, create structures of responsibility, empowerment, and accountability, and enable everybody in a group or team to work more efficiently. Coaching as a methodology is a great addition to any manager or supervisor who knows that the old "command and control" form creates more resistance than it crates solutions. Coaching as a leadership modality also identifies that leaders lead by mobilizing and unleashing potential in people through the framing of a vision and the embodiment of a story.

Third, communicators & personal developers. What is a Meta-Question?

The Meta-States Model of Neuro-Semantics opened up the whole realm of questioning at meta-levels and so introduced the meta-questions.    Meta questions have been around for a long time, however have been misunderstood...

Here’s what they wrote in the first NLP book: “When you ask questions like, ‘How do you feel about that?’ (Whatever 'that' might be) you are, in fact, asking your client for a fuller representation (than even Deep Structure) of your client’s experience of the world. And what you are doing by asking this particular question is asking for what you know is a necessary component of the client’s reference structure.” (The Structure of Magic, Vol. I, p. 160)

Actually, “How do you feel about that?” is a meta-question which takes us upward to the next higher logical level inasmuch as it asks about thoughts-and-feelings at the next highest level.

In terms of the Meta-States model, it elicits the person’s frame-of-reference and the conceptual or semantic state that governs the experience. These are typically largely unconscious.

The power of meta-questions is that they allow us to enter into a person’s (including our own) matrix of frames of meaning, level upon level, and identify the full structure of a model of the world. Currently in Neuro-Semantics we have identified over 100 some terms and expressions that can be used as meta-questions.

What is a Frame?

Above and beyond the Movies in our minds are our frames.  This includes our belief frames, value frames, understanding frames, expectation frames, history frames, imagination frames, intention frames, etc.  There are dozens and dozens of such frames.

For a simple example, someone re-members falling off their bicycle as a child.  As this memory plays in the theatre of their mind, do they frame it as: a failure, as learning, as feedback on how to improve, as 'what always happens to me', as a natural part of life, etc.  The list of possible frames goes on and on.  How they frame that experience will determine their emotional and behavioral responses much more than the memory of the experience itself.

Another way of saying this is that frames are the inner game that we play.  They create and govern the outer games of our lives.

The Cinema playing tells us what we are thinking about.  The Frames provide us the structure of that thought.

What is the Matrix ModelTM?

The Matrix Model developed by Dr. L.Michael Hall is a systemic framework that combines cognitive-behavioral psychology and developmental psychology to provide a dynamic way to think about how all of our meanings frames such as beliefs, values, understandings etc. are embedded within a framework as a unified system.  The Matrix model is used by Neuro-Semanticists to detect the meaning frames that governs a person's life and experiences, and to transform limiting and even toxic meaning frames to more empowering and enhancing frames.  This model gives a Coach a holistic model for working with both individuals and organizations for profiling and tracing a change through the entire system.  For more information on the Matrix Model see the book by the same name by L.Michael Hall.

What is 'Modeling' in NLP and Neuro-Semantics?

Modeling is the process which NLP & Neuro-Semantics both were created from.

'Modeling' in NLP & Neuro-Semantics refers to taking an unconscious skill and making the structure explicit so that it can be replicated.   Typically we model the structure of excellence, however the same process has and can be used to model pathology.  The model is always a simplified version of the actual experience so in Neuro-Semantics we seek to create models that contain only the necessary and sufficient variables to replicate the experience.  Whereas NLP provides the tools to model primary level experiences and strategies, Neuro-Semantics expands on the modeling process by providing tools to model and organize the higher level belief structures, the meta-level frames, the person themselves vs. just the skills, in addition to providing models to model cultures - family cultures, organizational cultures, national cultures, etc.

What is the NS Self-Actualization Model?

There are three NS Self-Actualization models developed by L. Michael Hall.  The NS Self-Actualization model specifies the theoretical frameworks of the concept of self-actualizing (making actual one's potentials by mobilizing resources), the Matrix of Self-Actualization, and the Self-Actualization Quadrants. These models detail the definition, meaning, components, and processes of actualizing one's best possibilities.  In the context of coaching, these models give us practical and applicable tools to actualize the vision created within the first Human Potential Movement by Abraham Maslow and Carl Rogers, among others.
