The Models of Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP)

Below is a list of the Models of Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), where they came from, and what they do!

The Meta-Model of Language

The Meta-Model is the model that started it all…  The first model of the field of NLP.

The Meta-Model was formed when the founders of NLP went out and modelled two therapeutic geniuses (Virginia Satir from family therapy & Fritz Perls from gestalt therapy).

Using the most cutting edge linguistic model of the time they discovered some linguistic patterns that seemed to consistently leash people’s inner potential, as well as a set of linguistic patterns that could be used to untie those mental patterns and create seemingly magical transformational change.

The result? 11 linguistic patterns and a set of associated questions to undo the magic of these patterns which was detailed out ininitial book that launched off the field of NLP, The Structure of Magic, Vol. 1: A Book About Language and Therapy.

Since then, the applications of this model have gone well beyond traditional therapy and has been used with extraordinary results in the fields of Life Coaching, sports coaching, sales, marketing, personal development and pretty much any field where being a masterful communicator would be to your advantage.

The Milton Model

Using the same tools as before, plus the insights from the Meta-Model, the founders of NLP set out to model the therapeutic & hypnotic patterns of Milton Erickson – one of the leading hypnotherapists of the time.

Amazingly they discovered that many of the linguistic patterns of Milton Erickson were the exact opposite of the patterns they had made explicit in the Meta-Model of Language.

They also mapped out and added some additional hypnotic language patterns from Milton Erickson beyond those listed in The Structure of Magic, Vol. 1.

The result? The next 2 books in the field of NLP:
Patterns of the Hypnotic Techniques of Milton H. Erickson, M.D. Volume 1 and Patterns of the Hypnotic Techniques of Milton H. Erickson, M.D., Vol. 2.

These books modelled out the linguistic tools for influence and hypnotic change.

The Submodalities Model

The genius of NLP was in recognizing ‘Internal Sensory Representations’ as the building blocks of all ‘thought’ & ‘internal experience’.

The Submodalities Model allows Neuro-Linguistic Programmers to pay attention to the more precise features of those ‘internal sensory representations’, and the effects that they have on a person’s felt experience.

Since the introduction of the Meta-States model of Neuro-Semantics, many misconceptions around Submodality work have been blown out and the entire model has updated.

The Strategies (TOTE) Model

Whereas the first few models of NLP were generated by leveraging the linguistic model of Transformational Grammar (which has since been outdated and has not been mentioned in any NLP text since the first 2 books)…

The Strategies Model of NLP was modeled using the TOTE Model of Pribram, Galantar and Miller from Cognitive Psychology.

NLP used this model from Cognitive Psychology to more effectively model somebody’s subjective experience by mapping the step by step sequences of Internal Representations that occur between stimulus to response.

This NLP model was originally published in Neuro-Linguistic Programming: Volume I (The Study of the Structure of Subjective Experience).

And for some very interesting background reading I highly recommend: Plans and the Structure of Behavior by Miller, George a., Galanter, Eugene, Pribram, Karl H..

The Meta-Programs Model

The Meta-Programs Model goes beyond all of the previous models as it allows Neuro-Linguistic Programmers to detect the higher level thinking patterns of an individual.

These thinking patterns act as a higher level filter on all of the internal representations, strategies, and language patterns.

The Meta-Programs model allows the Practitioner to detect and utilize the thinking patterns of an individual for a variety of applications including personality profiling.  They can be ‘paced’ for advanced rapport, expanded for personal development, and utilized for increased influence.

The Timelines Model

The Time Lines Model of NLP leverages our internal subjective experience of time for a variety of different methods of change work.

A fun fact: The Time Lines model was actually the first model of NLP to be completely remodeled & updated with Neuro-Semantics!

I highly recommend this book for an mind bending journey into your subjective experience of time:
