A great way to build your coaching skills and confidence in yourself is through exchanging buddy coaching sessions. Not only will become more competent as a coach but you will also gain learnings and insights that are extremely valuable in terms of improving your business and service delivery.
Are you wondering what buddy coaching is?
Buddy coaching is trading coaching sessions with other coaches who are around your level of competence in order to practice coaching and get coached. A great buddy coach may be someone who graduated with you from your coaching program, a local coach from your area, a coach who you met online or through your network, etc.
Buddy coaches are great for many reasons.
- They don’t have high expectations since the sessions are exchanged for free.
- The pressure to perform is much less because they are aware you are practicing.
- They may know some of what you are doing so they can offer you high quality feedback during or after the session.
- You can get coaching around your blocks that prevent you from performing at your best and building your practice/business
- Not only do you get practice coaching others, but you get to experience being a client. In the client role you can learn a lot about what works for you and what doesn’t work, perhaps as much as you can from actually coaching.
If your buddy coaching is going well you can gain practice hours, case studies, and get some testimonials from people who are satisfied with their experience of you. Again, not only is this something that I did a lot in the beginning of my practice to gain competence and confidence, but this is something that I still practice. I aim to devote at least 2 hours per month to buddy coaching after 10+ years of experience.
