A friend messaged me this week:
“The last time we heard frm u, u were off camping in North Florida… & then we didn’t hear frm you 😅😂”
Fair. You haven’t heard from me either.
Two weekends ago I went camping for the first time in decades, and I’ve been off the grid since.
First night, too hot. Second night, too cold. Funny how narrow the comfort zone can be.
After three days away from screens and tech, the nine of us did a debrief on the last day. Everybody went around the circle and shared what they admire in each other person.
A common theme I received is that I’m able to see people. That I help people feel seen.
It wasn’t always that way.
Over 15 years ago I remember being in a similar situation and being impressed by how people could see other people’s superpowers when I couldn’t.
Perhaps it was because I was so used to seeing flaws and what’s wrong at that phase of my life. In myself, in others, and in the world.
This time, I felt so comfortable and confident telling people what I admire about them. I could tell each and every person what I see in them that I’d like to develop more in myself.
I used to not be able to see it. Now I can.
And that changes a lot. I get to see the bright side of myself, of life, and of others. I get to see what’s worth modeling in the people around me, and enjoy the journey more along the way. And the people around me get to feel seen, especially when they’re not able to see their superpowers themselves. That empowers them, and it builds trust.
You can’t replicate the excellence in others if you don’t have the eyes to see it.
Which is a perfect segue to next week.
I’m heading to Mauritius to run four days of training on modeling excellence (being able to see and replicate the unconscious expertise of others), plus a corporate training while I’m in town.
Then I’m taking a week to reflect, revitalize, and aim ahead on the beach.
Is there anyone in your life with a superpower they can’t see yet?
Maybe today’s a good day to let them know.
To seeing people and being seen,
Jason
