Are your goals so big that no progress ever feels like enough?
Recently one of my high performer clients asked me “How do you celebrate progress?” A question I struggled with for years.
Like many ambitious people, he was suffering from a persistent case of “it’s never enough.” Consistently working on but rarely stopping to appreciate his progress.
I recognized the pattern immediately because for a long time that was exactly how I lived. For my first five years in business, this way of operating pushed me into burnout more frequently than I would have liked.
The problem wasn’t a lack of progress. The problem was discounting.
Thought’s like “That’s not good enough” “I should have done more.” “I should be farther along.”
Because my goals were big, and the final finish line was so far in the future, it was easy to discount the progress I was making along the way.
The results were living in a constant (self-induced) pressure, work that felt like a slog, and burnout when the system finally overloaded.
My first failed attempt at solving this problem was to create a list of ways I could celebrate. At the end of the week, if I hit my milestones, I would reward myself with a treat e.g. go out for a nice meal, buy something I wanted, take a day off. A practical strategy, but something about them never felt quite right.
It wasn’t until years later that I discovered a much better solution.
Appreciation.
Instead of rewarding progress with something external, I would simply take a moment to appreciate the step that just happened.
No matter how small.
That’s it.
No need for externally imposed reward system, extremely efficient, and it was completely free.
Just a moment of genuine appreciation applied directly to the progress.
Like sunlight on a seedling, appreciation creates the environment that allows new habits to take root and grow.
Without it, progress struggles. With it, small seeds of momentum can compound.
Appreciation is the antidote to discounting.
It allows progress to be nurtured, and rather than relying on external rewards the progress begins to fuel itself.
That’s the real payoff: Celebration doesn’t have to wait until the finish line.
When it does, not only does it release pressure and improve performance, but the journey becomes lighter, more enjoyable, and far more sustainable.
And even while your goals are ambitions, you can enjoy your progress along the way.
