Saturday I went for a 3-hour deep tissue session.
I’ve had chronic pain most of my life (fortunately, I’ve lived long enough to say that).
This was my fourth or fifth round with this body worker.
The first time I went in optimistic. They were highly knowledgeable, experienced, caring, results-oriented, and thorough. After the session I went to bed feeling great.
The next morning I woke up to the worst flare-up in a decade.
Out of commission. Day two was worse. Day three I was scared.
Then on day four, I was back and better.
A month later I went back. And this time I went in differently. I knew what was likely coming, and I leaned in.
Same disruption. Two days down instead of three.
After the session I listened to my body carefully, moved gently, and did my best to learn and integrate better body mechanics while my body put itself back together.
Yesterday was round four or five. He went deep. Before bed I could feel my body lit up.
Woke up… fine. Actually, pretty darn good, relatively speaking.
No massive disruption. And for me, a huge win.
It seems my body is starting to learn the lesson he’s been trying to teach it.
Here’s the thing…
Whether you’re a coach, leader, or someone working to take your ‘self’ or your performance to the next level, changing patterns requires disruption.
The disruption isn’t the problem.
And the discomfort of disruption isn’t the problem either.
It’s the price of the upgrade.
If your life is perfect (and those who you coach or lead are consistently performing at their peak) then there’s nothing to disrupt… manage away.
If not, something needs to be disrupted.
Not to disrupt for the sake of disruption, but to work through the discomfort of disruption to build something better on the other side.
