One of the presuppositional beliefs of NLP is that ‘People are not broken, they work perfectly well’ and this is a major paradigm shift for a lot of people,
Before NLP, psychology for the most part focused on the ‘abnormalities’ and dysfunctions in human development.
But NLP didn’t look at people through that perceptual lens, instead Neuro-Linguistic Programmers looked at humans through the lens of an Engineer/Computer programmer.
Through this lens all behavior makes perfect sense! Of course you are getting outcome X —- your programming leads you to to behave in that way.
For example, does someone who is afraid of dogs ever forget to be afraid when they see a dog? Of course not! Their programming works perfectly well to achieve that outcome. Every single time without fail. Not only is there nothing wrong with them, but quite the opposite…
They are extremely skilled at that programming, excellent in fact! And if I (or anyone else) had that same programming we would be achieving the same outcome!
This paradigm shifting way of looking at the world, that “People are not broken, they work perfectly well” allows the NLP Practitioner to separate the person from their programming and to take a meta-position to the programming.
“How does this programming work?”
“How can I replicate this piece of excellence?”
“What are the important and necessary variables in keeping this performance stable?”
“When would this ‘programming’ be valuable?”
“What are the leverage points for change so that this experience doesn’t function like this anymore?”
This also leads to some amazing news… the problem is never you, the other person, the world, or even the past. The problem is always the programming, and the programming can be changed!
