NLP Techniques to Intensify Emotional States

Would you like to know some NLP strategies you can use to amplify your resourceful states?  

When you can do that you can live life with more passion, you’ll become more resourceful in handling challenges, and you’ll be much more effective at running your emotions rather than your emotions running you.

If you are a coach, manager, parent, or friend, not only can  the strategies I am going to teach below be used with yourself, but can also be used with others to enhance the positive emotions of the people around you.

One of the most interesting things about consciously using our emotions as tools for self-actualization is in how people ‘naturally’ learn to use their emotions.

In my 10+ years of experimentation when I ask people to consciously lower the intensity of their negative emotions a typical response is “I can’t”.  They can’t make their negative emotions less through conscious attempts. 

However if I ask someone in an unresourceful state to amplify it they have no problem!

This is most fascinating because if I ask someone in a resourceful state to consciously reduce their positive emotions, while they typically don’t want to, they can do it with no problem.    

And when I ask for them to amplify their resourceful emotions, once again, it is not uncommon for them to tell me they can not.

The reason why this is the way it is isn’t so important for the purpose of this article, but I ask again, would you like some strategies for amplifying the resourceful states that you are experiencing on purpose?

So how can we amplify positive emotional states?

It will help if you can consciously access emotions in yourself at will and you can learn to do that in this video: youtube.com/watch?v=3vCQ5i1UKPw

  1. Intensification through Detail and Vividness
    1. Step into a memory where you had the desired resourceful state (Stepping in vs. Stepping out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-1I8ZSGZrWg)
    2. ‘Imagine’ there as vividly as possible
    3. Notice the details of the scenario e.g. what did you see, what did you hear, what were you feeling, where in your body were you feeling it, etc.
    4. More detail and vividness you pull out of the experience will tend to amplify the state
  1. The ‘Turn it down a notch’ intensification technique
    1. Step into desired resource state
    2. On a scale of 1-10 how intense is it?
    3. Turn it down 1 notch (you probably won’t want to, but if you can do this it presupposes you can control it.)
    4. Put it back where it was on 1-10
    5. Now that you’ve learned how to amplify it, keep turning it up beyond where it was!
  1. The ‘Imagine a dial’ intensification technique (for people who are more visual)
    1. Step into desired resource state.
    2. On a scale of 1-10 how intense is it?
    3. Imagine a dial turned to that number.
    4. Grab the dial and turn it down 1 notch and notice how this lowers the intensity.
    5. Grab the dial and put it back where it was on 1-10 and notice what it is like to amplify your resourceful emotions.
    6. Now that you’ve learned how to amplify it, grab that dial and keep turning it up beyond where it was!
  1. Submodality intensification technique (For more information on submodalities: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mdAmM9vHcms)
    1. Notice the cinematic features of the resourceful state
    2. Discover the submodality(s) that most influence the state
    3. Amplify these submodalities to increase the intensity

Here you have four techniques for increasing the intensity of positive emotions in yourself and others and to run your own emotions more than your emotions running you.  Try them out and let me know how they work for you!
