Do you live in the past, present or future? The ideal time zone isn't what you think! - Perception Academy

Do you live in the past, present or future? The ideal time zone isn’t what you think!

Did you know that there is a way of perceiving time that is shared by some of the most productive and self-actualized people? Would you like to know what that is?

There is an interesting thing about time…

Have you ever walked out of your home and tripped over a pile of time? Of course not! That is because “time” isn’t something that exists in the external world, it is a psychological concept.

And how fascinating is it that each of us has a different experience of time. Do you or someone you know live in the past? Or perhaps you live in the future? Or maybe you know someone who gets totally lost in the present?

As you can imagine, the way someone experiences their concept of time greatly impacts their personality!

* So which of the ‘time zones’ do you tend to live in: past, present, or future?
* How much time do you spend in each psychological time zone?
* And equally importantly, what are you doing while you are there?

So are you wondering about the ideal way to organize your psychological time travel?

Let’s start with the ‘past’…

How much time do you spend in ‘the past’, and when you psychologically travel there, what do you do? Do you use it to re-experience negative events? Spin around bad experiences? Torture yourself with what you ‘should have done’?

If yes, you are probably not optimized in the way you are using your memories!

Ideally the past is primarily for 3 things:
1. Learning
2. Re-experiencing positive experiences for accessing our inner resourcefulness
3. Nostalgia

I aim to spend about 15-20% of my psychological time in the past for those 3 things. What about yourself?

Now let’s jump to the future…

How much time do you spend in the psychological future? And when you are there, what are you doing there? Do you use it to prophesize negative futures, or to induce states of anxiety in yourself?

If yes, you are probably not using your human ability to imagine the future most resourcefully.

Ideally we use the psychological future to set our intentions for how we would like things to be, directionalize our life, vision how we would like to create ourselves anew, and to imagine our desired futures.

Just like the past I aim to spend about 15-20% of my time in the future. How about yourself? How would you like it to be?

And now for ‘the present’…

How much time do you spend in the present?

Ideally I aim to spend 70-80% of my time in the present. The present is where life happens! In this way of psychologically organizing time we can spend most of our time in the present, accessing our resources from the past so that we can move toward our desired future.

Among other things we can use the present to access states of ‘flow’/peak performance, to create memories, and to enjoy the moment.

When we consciously practice using our concept of time as a tool to self-actualize, rather than as unconscious directives that we must follow, we move closer towards evolving ourselves by choice, rather than by chance.

What is your biggest takeaway from this article? What are you going to do to implement this in your life? I am curious to hear! Feel free to leave your comments here: https://www.facebook.com/perceptionacademy/posts/1473588012793354
