How to Alter Your Emotions on Command | What is Meta-Stating and How to Meta State

Would you like the power to alter your emotional states on command?

One of the most basic yet powerful tools from the field of Neuro-Semantics is called ‘meta-stating’ and it gives us the power to do just that.

Meta-stating is the process of taking whatever state you are in, and going meta (transcending and including) your state in another state of your choosing.

Below I will explain step-by-step how to do that on command, but before I do I want to be clear on something important.

‘Meta-stating’ is something that you do already, in fact you do it quite often, although you are mostly unaware of it.

  • Have you ever been frustrated by something, and then get upset with yourself for being frustrated?
  • Have you ever been happy about learning, and then proud of yourself for being happy?
    Or curious about why you are happy?

All of these are meta-state structures. (If you want more information on the differences between primary states and meta-states you can read this article.

An interesting function of meta-states is that whichever state is on top will govern and modulate all of the states below it.

So if you are afraid, and then you bring hatred to that fear (“I hate being afraid”) the hatred will coalesce down into the fear creating the experience of ‘hating my fear’.

But if you are afraid, and then you bring calmness to that fear, the calmness will coalesce down into the fear creating an experience of being ‘calmly afraid’.

I imagine that this would be a much more appropriate response in many situations.

Another interesting fact about meta-states is that they don’t have to make ‘logical sense’ in order to be experienced.

Does it make logical sense to be afraid of your fear? Not really, but I guarantee you that there are people in the world who have this experience.

Does it make logical sense to bring pleasure to pain? Not really, and yet I guarantee you that there are people in the world who have this experience.

Meta-states do not work logically, they work psycho-logically.

They make sense based on the internal logic of the person experiencing them, but from the outside they do not need to make any ‘logical’ sense at all.

So are you wondering how to ‘meta-state’ yourself, consciously for a change?

In the field of Neuro-Semantics we can streamline this process into just 3 steps (at more advanced levels there is a 5 step process and even a 7 step process):

Here is a process for basic meta-stating:

  1. What troubling state are you currently/frequently experiencing that you would like to alter/transform?
  2. What state would you like to bring to that state? (Menu list: acceptance, appreciation, non-judgmental observation, calmness, pleasure, peace, etc.).
  3. Access the state that you would like to bring to your current state (Watch this video on how to access states in yourself).
  4. Amplify that state.
  5. Apply it to the primary state and notice how it transforms it.

Simple enough in theory, yes?

Now comes the practice.

We have an expression in the field of NLP that says “knowledge is just a rumor until it is experienced in the body”.
