Use Your Emotions as Tools Rather than Programs that Drive You

A major focus of mine over the past few years has been on emotional state management: How can we run our own emotions rather than our emotions running us.

One of the things I have discovered throughout this process is that there are two major ways of using our emotions.

Just like you can take a car into the shop to fix something wrong with it, or you can bring it into the shop to supercharge it, we can use our emotions remedially i.e. to help us heal/fix problems and we can also use our emotions generatively i.e. to enhance/supercharge ourselves, as opposed to fixing problems.

In order to utilize your human power of emotions as a tool to enhance your life, the first step is to recognize that, in addition to being automatically induced into emotions by your environment that you can access your emotions purposefully.

You can access your emotions by choice!

After you know how to access your emotions consciously, it helps to know what your options are in terms of emotional states that you can utilize.

The fact is that most of us do not have a very rich emotional vocabulary which greatly limits the number of emotions that we can consciously choose to access. I have heard it said that in the english language we have a far larger quantity of words for negative emotions than positive emotions making it even more important to increase your ‘positive emotional vocabulary’.
