One of the most common challenges I hear from people is: “I don’t know where I want to be in 10 years.” If you’ve ever felt that way, you’re not alone. Visioning is one of the most powerful tools for living intentionally, yet it can be surprisingly difficult.
Visioning isn’t about setting rigid goals—it’s about connecting with your authentic desires, beyond societal expectations, childhood programming, or what you should want. It’s about discovering what you truly want. I find that setting concrete outcomes flows best when coming from a strong and authentic vision.
Why Visioning Matters
The question, “What do I want?” seems simple, yet it’s one of the hardest questions to answer. And one of the most important. It’s the first step in coaching, self-leadership, and designing a life that’s actually fulfilling.
Unlike outcome setting, which focuses on what’s within your control, visioning is broader. It allows you to dream beyond immediate constraints—meeting your ideal partner, running a thriving business, or living in your dream location. It’s freeform, but that doesn’t mean it should be unrealistic.
How to Vision Effectively
- Separate desire from expectation. Whether or not you achieve it, what do you genuinely want? Start there.
- Always date your vision. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve looked back at old visions and wished I had written the date. It provides context and allows you to track your evolution.
- Write in the first person. Example: “It is December 1st, 2030, and I am…” This makes the vision feel real and embodied.
- Engage all your senses. What do you see, hear, feel? Even smell and taste, if relevant.
- Keep it short but meaningful. I find one page (front and back, max) to be the sweet spot. Anything more and it starts to lose clarity.
- Write it as a ‘day in the life.’ Walk yourself through an ideal day, including work, relationships, health, finances, and fun. If it’s a weekday, describe your weekend too. Be sure to include all areas of life including health, romance, relationships, finances, fun, etc. to make sure it is holistic.
- Start with the long-term and work backward. Write a 30-year vision before a 10-year one. Write a 5-year vision before a 1-year vision. You’ll want to start with the end in mind for the highest quality of intentionality. This creates a roadmap for bridging the gap between now and your ideal future.
- Review and rewrite annually. Visioning isn’t a one-and-done exercise. Make it a system. Each year, review your past vision and write a new one. This builds a feedback loop and sharpens your predictive abilities over time.
The Power of Predictive Thinking
Your ability to predict your future—how long things take, what’s possible—will improve with practice. When you review your past visions, you’ll notice patterns: Did I underestimate the time required? Did I overestimate? This reflection strengthens your ability to plan effectively.
Visioning isn’t just about imagination, it’s about developing the skills to manifest your vision into reality. This means not only identifying what you want but also cultivating the ability to follow through, take the necessary actions, adapt, and persist. Over time, this practice strengthens your ability to align intention with execution. This requires developing the skills to master your perception to win the inner game, but none of this is relevant until you are clear on your desired path forward.
I’ve been doing this for a decade. Every year, I write a five-year vision and a one-year vision. For the past five years, I’ve received letters from myself one year ago and from myself from five years ago. It’s quite the rewarding experience. I’ve even written 40-year visions just to explore what’s possible. It’s a practice that keeps me grounded in my intentionality and directionalizing my life by choice rather than by chance.
Are You Ready to Try?
Set a 10-minute timer. Give yourself permission to vision your future—five or ten years out. Don’t overthink it. Just write. And most importantly, set a reminder to review it in a year. You might be surprised at how much of it comes true. Then comment below with any questions, comments or to let us know you’ve taken action!
