What would you think if I told you to “get lost”? What if, instead of an insult, it was one of the most useful things I could say to you?
Working with high-performing leaders, coaches, and entrepreneurs over the years, I’ve noticed a pattern: getting lost is something they just don’t do enough of.
The people who are most driven tend to grip the tightest. Gripping tight on results, tight on time, tight on control. And that grip, paradoxically, is exactly what gets in their way. It lowers the quality of their performance and quietly erodes their quality of life.
The solution, more often than not, is to learn how to get lost.
There are two specific places where this changes everything.
The first is in your performances. Have you ever been so absorbed in what you were doing that your sense of self just disappeared? No self-monitoring, no managing outcomes, no internal commentary running in the background, just pure engagement with what’s in front of you. This is when we function at our best. It’s what flow states are actually about: becoming so present in an experience that everything else falls away, and you can simply do what you do, fully.
The second is in your pauses. How skilled are you at getting lost in not doing? At fully stopping. Not managing a break, not half-resting while your mind keeps running. Truly letting go.
These two states form a complete cycle. Flow fuels depth, focus, and peak output. Pauses allows that output to compound over time without burning you out in the process. One without the other is an incomplete equation.
Most people have trained one side heavily and left the other almost entirely undeveloped. You probably already know which side that is for you.
Whether your version of “getting lost” needs to be in the work, or in the pause, that’s where the real training is. And the next time someone tells you to get lost, you might just thank them for the reminder.
To your next level of momentum, meaning, and mastery,
Jason Schneider
P.S. Want to know exactly how to train both sides of this? Turning flow on + dropping into purposeful pauses is exactly what we’ll be implementing in our next small-group cohort. If you want to optimize your performance, sharpen your mindset, and lead others to do the same, apply for the opportunity to join our next cohort.
