Have you ever held back from using a new NLP, coaching, or communication skill because you were afraid it would feel clunky, awkward, or maybe even backfire?
If that resonates, I want to offer you a counterintuitive approach that can actually make it easier to step into action with more confidence and fluidity.
It might sound paradoxical, but sometimes the best way to fast-track your implementation is to temporarily delay yourself from practicing it.
Specifically, after learning a new skill, set aside some intentional time—not to apply it—but to observe it in action in day-to-day conversations.
Rather than forcing yourself to immediately apply the skill, spend a few days watching how that skill naturally shows up in real-world interactions. Study the patterns. Notice what works. And then, take action.
This approach is especially valuable when learning the core foundational NLP and Neuro-Semantic communication tools—the “white belt skills” that underpin everything else: rapport, state elicitation, anchoring, etc.
Let’s take rapport as an example.
Where can you watch?
- In-person: Coffee shops, restaurants, networking events, supermarkets, parks, anywhere.
- Media: Interviews, movies, reality TV—even actors often display striking patterns of rapport.
- Personal reflection: Review past conversations, replaying the dynamics in your mind, looking for patterns you may have missed.
Key questions to guide your observation:
- What was the quality of rapport in this interaction?
- What did I notice that built or enhanced rapport?
- What disrupted or undermined rapport?
- How does this real-world observation align with what I learned in training?
- What can I apply from this observation to improve my future implementation?
The biggest caveat is just, don’t get stuck just watching.
Ultimately, the field of NLP and Neuro-Semantics is about embodied learning. Skills are more important than head knowledge, and mastery comes from taking action.
So, don’t let observation turn into avoidance. Give yourself one week maximum to observe, then, get in the game.
Pick one skill, observe it, then, step into action. Even more powerful would be to get high quality feedback on your implementation from a trained expert (which is one of the core benefits of working with an experienced practitioner).
If you spread your focus across multiple skills or try to break down every aspect of an interaction all at once, you’ll likely overwhelm yourself. Keep it simple: one skill, one lens of observation, one week. Then, dive in and apply it.
Why Observation Works
This observation phase isn’t just a crutch for beginners. It mirrors the modeling process that birthed the NLP field itself.
Observation primes your nervous system. You already perform many of the NLP skills naturally and unconsciously. Watching with intention tunes you into those patterns, giving you clearer mental maps for bringing them into conscious, deliberate use.
You can even take it a step further. When observing someone skilled, imagine stepping into their shoes to try on their physiology, their tone, their timing. Feel what it would be like to move through the interaction as they do.
This primes your body and mind for smoother, more natural implementation when it’s your turn to act.
The Path to Mastery
Skill development doesn’t happen in a vacuum. Observation and action are both essential, but they need to be integrated into a larger system:
- Know the Core Skills: Understand what foundational tools you need to master.
- Plan Your Progress: Focus on one skill at a time.
- Take Consistent Action: Implement regularly—and yes, make it joyful if you want consistency.
- Seek Expert Feedback: Get input from someone more experienced who can spot what you can’t.
- Integrate Feedback: Adjust, refine, and apply what you learn.
- Maintain Your Vision: Know where you’re headed, and refine that vision as you progress.
- Master Your State: Sustain the mental and emotional states that allow you to persist.
Skill is built through cycles of observation, action, feedback, and adjustment.
So, study the skills. Study the people. Then, take action.
That’s how you’ll unleash your potential and master your perception.
