Have you ever been in the zone, riding a wave of flow so strong that you burn the midnight oil telling yourself “I better keep going because who knows when I’ll catch this inspiration again”?
This is a common mistake I run into when exploring people’s relationship with inspiration, productivity, and flow. They don’t trust their ability to re-enter flow on command, so when they catch it, they try to hold onto it as long as possible and milk every last drop out of it. But there is a problem with this.
Running past our natural limits leads us to burn fuel from the reserve tank, sacrificing the future for the now. In the long run this is not a productive path and actually lowers our overall productivity. Worse yet, when we do this consistently it leads to chronic fatigue, burnout, and even disease.
Yes, being able to turn on flow on command is a crucial skill for sustainable peak productivity. But being able to turn flow off on command is just as essential. I sometimes refer to this practice as taking “purposeful pauses”. Taking intentional breaks to recharge your nervous system and prepare yourself for the next round of deep work at all scales of your life, whether throughout your day, weekly, monthly, quarterly and annually.
So what does that look like in practice? Below are some ways to revitalize between flow sessions. As you read through this list, think about which 1-3 would be most impactful for you to add to your practice.
1. Mentally Reset
- Give yourself permission to do nothing and simply be.
- Meditate (I personally enjoy meditating into times in my life where I was deeply relaxed and resting, for example after an intense physical activity, or a “vacation” where I had nothing to do and not a worry in the world).
- Embrace the feeling of “free time” and savor it like your work is complete.
- Journal, pray, or use Neuro-Semantic tools to shift into a healing state.
- Practice non-judgmental observation to get out of your head and into the sensory pleasures of your present environment.
2. Physically Recharge
- Go for a walk, catch sunlight, and move your body to release tension.
- Stretch, dance, or exercise to refresh your physiology.
- Ask ai for a 5, 10, or 15 minute stretch/movement/exercise sequence based on your personalized needs and follow through on it.
- Practice non-sleep deep relaxation, meditation, or take a short nap.
3. Ground & Nourish Your Body
- Stay hydrated or take a bathroom break.
- Putting your feet on the grass, earth, or sand to ground yourself.
- Eat a snack or balanced meal, letting meal times reset your mind.
- Sit in silence, listen to music, or enjoy a revitalizing conversation.
Each of these practices gives your nervous system a chance to rest and recharge. Life isn’t built to be lived constantly in go-mode. For your sustainable success you need to learn not only how to get into flow, but when to step out of it and how to revitalize when you do.
