Write for You, Publish for Impact!

Started Writing for Myself… Here’s What Happened

If you want to be a successful coach, creator, or leader, it helps to get into the habit of creating consistently. Yes, over time, creating and sharing content will help you build a name for yourself, generate business, and earn respect, recognition, and authority.

But what if those very intentions of wanting to “get something from it” were actually holding you back? What if that mindset is exactly what was preventing you from taking consistent action and holding you back from your highest success?

Yesterday, after finishing one of her first blog posts, a mentee asked me if she should keep writing. She was afraid her post wasn’t “good enough” and was looking for some validation. And while the writing was far from perfect, it seemed genuine, insightful, and it felt like a true expression of “her voice”. After reading it, my answer was simple:

“Yes, of course keep writing.” But not to be “good enough” for others. Not to get likes or shares.

Write for yourself.

The act of writing (or any form of creative self-expression) isn’t primarily about the product you create or the results you hope to get from it. Those outcomes are secondary. The real value is in what the process does for you. The journey of working over your ideas.  Working towards discovering your clarity, refining your thinking, and uncovering your true voice.

Writing helps you explore topics that matter to you. It forces you to slow down, to think more deeply, and to organize your ideas with more intention and nuance than you ever would by just keeping them in your head. It allows you to take something abstract, loose, and fuzzy and shape it into something real and solid.

In fact, whenever I start writing I very frequently start with a loose idea and I have no idea exactly where it is going to go. I discover the path along the way. Sometimes I even start out on an intended path and I end up somewhere completely different.  Somewhere better, more aligned, and in a way that I would have never discovered had I not set out on the journey in the first place. This article is no exception.

That’s why my answer to her was so firm: Keep going, keep expressing, and keep pushing forward. Don’t write to be “good enough” for others. Write to grow yourself.

No, it won’t be perfect, it never is. But through the act of creation (whether it’s a blog, a social post, a presentation, or even private journaling) you’ll nearly always end up more clear than when you started. This act of working a rough idea into a ‘final product’ brings you very close to the essence of your true power of creation.  And from that process you grow your power to think, to create, to self-express, and to find your authentic voice.

But, if it only stays with you, you’re missing something important.

So when my mentee asked me if I recommended that she publishes her post, what do you think I said? My response was another clear “Of course!”  Why?  Because publishing, sharing your creations with others, brings your self-development into contact with the outer world. It opens a feedback loop and it keeps the growth process alive.

If we only create in private, we miss out on a crucial part of the process. We cut off the feedback loops that allow us to reality-test, gain perspective, and have an impact. And let’s be honest, keeping our work to ourselves can sometimes just be a sneaky form of hiding.

Think of it like a Venn diagram. One circle is what matters deeply to you: your personal clarity, your voice, your creativity. The other is what resonates with others: what sparks insight, connection, or emotion.

Publishing helps you discover the overlap. The zone of resonance. And that zone where your personal truth can become a public service. If you only write for yourself, yes, you’ll grow. But you’ll miss the opportunities to sharpen your thinking through feedback, and you’ll miss the moments when your inner voice can become outer leadership.

Publishing isn’t about putting out some perfect final product, it’s about being in process and keeping the dance between you and the outer world alive. Apple didn’t start with the iPhone 16. They released version 1, got feedback, refined the product, and kept iterating.  To wait for “version 16” before sharing with the world would have been impossible, not to mention unsustainable, and would have done the world a great disservice.

Greatness doesn’t emerge from waiting, it comes from movement. From the ongoing rhythm of: Create. Share. Listen. Improve. Repeat.

Of course, there needs to be some level of “good enoughness” before sharing your creations with the outer world so be sure to honor the Rings of Risk and start sharing in safer circles until you’re ready to expand. And, even if you publish something and it’s not great, very few people will see it anyways. The algorithms will only show it to the right people with whom your message was a good fit.

So if you’re waiting until it’s “good enough” you’ll likely be waiting a long time. Too long.  Instead, write your truth, organize your thoughts, clarify your message, and share it with appropriate circles. The only way to get to your next level is to let your imperfect voice echo into the appropriate circles.

Not for likes. Not for approval. But for alignment, feedback, and impact.

And if you’re a part-time coach, trainer, or 1-1 service provider wanting to go full time (or just wanting to get started making more money in a way that is meaningful) this practice goes far beyond personal growth. Publishing content is also a powerful way to generate goodwill in the marketplace. It creates resonance, builds trust, and invites people to see how you think in a way that can add value to their lives.

You’ll also need systems for opening opportunities through authentic, low-pressure invitations, and for converting consultations into clients (without pressure and while generating even more goodwill with your prospects, whether or not they decide to sign on today).

You’ll need systems to manage your energy, habits, and focus to maintain a powerful productivity that is sustainable without procrastination or burn out. And of course you’ll need to consistently deliver value that’s at least 2–10x what your clients are investing if you want to have clients that stay for a long time, come back for more when they are ready, and do your marketing for you via a steady flow of testimonials, referrals and word-of mouth business.

These are the systems that we train inside the Meta-Coach Pathway + the INSIDERS Accelerator.  Not just how to show up as a professional people helper, but how to sustain the business, lifestyle, and impact that brought you here in the first place.

So don’t wait to get started. Write for you. Publish for us. And when you’re ready to accelerate your next level development, let’s chat!
