‘Release Rhythms’ for Consistent Momentum

‘Release Rhythms’ for Consistent Momentum

Why I Learned to Love Deadlines (And Why You Might Too)

Have you ever had a product, service, or skill that you invested in developing and yet you never seem to be ready to release it to the world? Lately, I’ve been receiving this question over and over again.

“How do I know when something’s ready to share with the world?”

Clients ask this about hitting “publish” on a piece of content, designing and delivering presentations, coaching paying clients, showing up to networking events… the list goes on.

Would you like to know my honest answer?  It’s never fully ready.  And, it’s  simultaneously very likely ready enough as is. And that’s why I’ve learned to love deadlines.

Deadlines used to stress me out. They felt arbitrary, constraining, and filled with pressure. “Why do I have to do this by X date?”, “According to whom?”

And if the final product wasn’t “ready enough” I would just push back the deadline.  Easy solution! Or was it…

Over time I’ve come to see deadlines as one of the most powerful tools in my creative and professional life. I currently have a self-imposed deadline of publishing an article every week. I have a deadline just about every week for delivering a live training. I have a deadline for creating and delivering a performance piece every year.

I refer to these as Release Rhythms: recurring, time-based commitments designed to counteract perfectionism and keep my work moving forward at its current level of ‘ripeness’.

While it often seems that deadlines constrain us, paradoxically, they actually exist to help us release. And release rhythms aren’t one-off deadlines, just like their name suggests they are rhythmic. Daily. Weekly. Monthly. Quarterly. Annually.

They create the heartbeat of my workflow and without them I’d almost certainly stay stuck in the trap of “almost ready.”

And I don’t keep these deadlines to myself. My clients expect a new training each week, my audience expects a new blog post every week, my collaborators know what I’m committed to delivering and at what frequency. The public commitment creates a healthy accountability and it builds trust. And it makes my follow-through a thousand times more likely.

Is there anywhere in your life where you’ve stuck yourself in the “not yet ready” trap? Just one more course, one more draft, one more refinement… and then I’ll be ready?

Here’s the thing. Every single time I publish an article I immediately think of five ways it could’ve been better. Same with every course I create, presentation I design, coaching session I deliver, and every social media post I make.

Why do I publish it, in full knowingness that it could be better? I’ve trained myself to think iteratively. Version 1.0 gets released, and then if I have more insight or feedback I just take note and save them for later knowing you always have the option to update to Version 2.0, 3.0, 4.0. (make it a “you” instead of “I” for this paragraph)

It’s no longer about getting it perfect before sharing it.  It’s about letting the world be part of the refinement process. It’s no longer about carrying the burden of working towards perfection in isolation, it becomes a collaborative effort with others in community.

Release. Receive. Refine. Repeat.

With a deadline, you get to move forward in “in-complete readiness” and improve not just through action, but through inter-action.

If you’re a high performer, coach, or leader there’s a good chance you’re sitting on something you know could make an impact but maybe you’ve been holding back because it doesn’t feel “ready”. Here is your invitation to stop waiting for it to be “good enough”.

Build a working prototype, create a deadline, and make it public (of course keep in mind the rings of risk). You’ll learn more from version 1.0 in the wild than with infinite time in your private lab of overthinking.

Getting yourself to implement and iterate consistently is just one of the core pieces of sustainable peak productivity. You know, the type of productivity where you end every day feeling proud of what you’ve accomplished knowing you’ve moved the needle forward on your personal and professional priorities, and with a surplus of vitality left over to enjoy yourself.

Moreover, you also need systems for managing your state so you can handle whatever life throws at you with minimal resistance and maximum resilience (all while enjoying the process). You need systems for building a clear vision for where you’re heading, re-visioning, and regular feedback loops (daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, annually) so you can adapt your strategies as needed for the best results with the least effort.

These are just some of the skills I support my clients with and encourage them to integrate within the Self-Leadership/Coaching Genius Certification plus INSIDERS Accelerator. At Perception Academy we don’t just give theory, we give you the practical systems, structures, and yes, the healthy deadlines and accountability to help you to consistently implement. You’ll learn how to move fast, iterate intelligently, and stop hiding your potential behind the illusion of “almost ready.”

Your next level isn’t waiting for you to be perfect, it’s waiting for you to publish. And healthy Release Rhythms are one of the supports that will help you get there.
